Lucian Freud, someone who consistently made my list of “Top Three Artistic Influences” has died. I read the news only moments ago.
I have never seen brushstrokes quite like his. I’ve never seen flesh rendered quite like he could. I’m really sad to read this. I did a quick search and read a few obituaries. Sadly, most of what I found focuses on the fact that he primarily painted nudes. I’ve never thought that it was his subjects that mattered—or as The New York Times put it—how his subjects “stared wide-eyed from the canvas, vulnerable to the artist’s ruthless inspection.” The important part of his work is that he could paint the hell out of a canvas.
